Super Twisted Nematic

Super-Twisted Nematic (STN) Display

A Super-Twisted Nematic (STN) display is a type of monochrome passive-matrix liquid crystal display (LCD). Unlike standard Twisted Nematic (TN) LCDs, which use a 90-degree molecular twist and lack a well-defined threshold voltage, STN displays feature a greater molecular twist—typically between 180 and 270 degrees. This increased twist provides improved electro-optical characteristics, including a more distinct threshold voltage, which makes STN displays better suited for passive-matrix addressing.

The key advantage of STN technology is its ability to support a higher number of lines and columns, enabling more detailed and complex displays while maintaining low power consumption.

Applications:
STN displays are commonly used in automotive instrument clusters, switchgear panels, industrial machinery interfaces, and small audio or electronic devices.
